How to Create a Charitable Fund

Steps to Create a Fund

Step 1 Contact the Foundation at the Development Department to discuss your charitable objectives.

Step 2 Fill out the Fund Agreement. You determine the amount and date of gift, name of your charitable fund, eligible advisors, and type of fund(s).

Step 3 Make an irrevocable gift to the Foundation to create your charitable fund.

Step 4 The Foundation's President will sign the fund agreement and return a copy, along with an acknowledgement letter to you. This letter serves as an official receipt and must be retained for your records.

Step 5 The Foundation begins to assist you in meeting your charitable goals. You can design your own charitable fund, add to an existing fund or let the Foundation determine where your assets will best fulfill your goals. Gifts are deductible at the time they are made to the Foundation, and you can make grants at times and in amounts most advantageous to you.

Other Points to Consider When Creating a Charitable Fund:

Building a philanthropic plan that pays off for you and future generations Since 1967, the Dade Community Foundation has been helping would-be philanthropists realize their charitable wishes with planned giving tools designed to help the community, as well as the donors. The Foundation currently holds nearly 300 funds from a diverse range of donors, which benefit a diverse range of causes. These funds form a pool of dollars whose fiscal growth the Foundation oversees. The foundation also disburses these funds through grants to a carefully screened selection of non-profit agencies and organizations. If you're interested in setting up a charitable fund the Foundation recommends that you consult with your attorney, accountant or financial advisor and call our Development Department.

Consider Your Philanthropic Objective What do you want to achieve with your money? Some people set up funds to support educational programs at their alma mater, while others support children's programs, culture and the arts or medical research to cure disease. Others leave their funds unrestricted, to be used by the Foundation to meet the greatest needs in the community. Depending on your desired level of participation and philanthropic interest, Dade Community Foundation offers several types of charitable funds as giving vehicles. See Types of Funds for additional details and sample agreements.

It's All Timing - and the Time is Right Some of the greatest opportunities to make significant charitable gifts arise when you're making other major business, personal or financial decisions. These include when you: writing or revising a will; contemplating the sale of a company, business or other major asset; planning your retirement; or becoming the recipient of a windfall profit.
